Ascending Node

Where an orbit crosses the reference plane moving northward.

Definition

The ascending node (☊) is where the orbiting body passes through the reference plane from south to north (increasing ecliptic latitude). The descending node is the southward crossing.

Longitude of ascending node

The angle Ω measured eastward along the ecliptic from the vernal equinox to the ascending node fixes the orientation of the orbit in space.
