Definition
Refraction deflects light passing through Earth's atmosphere toward the normal. A celestial object appears higher than its true geometric altitude. At the horizon refraction is about 34′; at 45° altitude only about 1′.
Standard correction
Meeus gives formulae for refraction under standard conditions (P = 1010 mbar, T = 10°C). Actual refraction varies with temperature, pressure and humidity.
